why tortilla prices matter to me

July 6th, 2007 at 08:26 pm

tortillas are the basis of Salvadoran diet, so, if tortillas become more expensive, EVERYTHING will soon be more expensive, too!!...they used to be $0.04 each and now they're $0.05 each!!...we hardly ever eat tortillas at my house (or bread, for that matter...did you know white bread is considered a "luxury item" by some segments of the population here??) but, if corn prices go up, soon everything else follows!...because of the atypical rainy season we're having, corn is scarce....ES is opening it's borders to Honduran and Nicaraguan corn to try to bring down the price a bit...I do hope the Salvadoran corn crops can be saved, though!

miclason - I have heard that because Americans are using more & more biodiesel fuel made from corn (due to concerns about global warming), it is driving up the price of tortillas in Mexico. I wonder if that is also affecting the prices in El Salvador? It is awful to think that something we are doing because we think it's a good thing is having a negative effect on people's lives in countries outside the USA. Hopefully more corn will be planted, and the auto makers will keep working on making cars more fuel-efficient, and of course I hope the El Salvadoran corn crop will be saved!

nope, it's just this weird weather we are having...the corn plants grew but then there wasn't enough water for them to produce a good crop, and now there are worms in it!!...

there's also the fear that some people might be hoarding it to increase the price Frown We are also investigating biofuels...they're talking about planting "higuerillo" and, what seemed more interesting to me, of recycling cooking oil!

Using corn for ethanol is going to drive up prices on lots of food in the US. Cattle are fed corn, which means the price of beef, and dairy will go up, as well as lots of other things. I think countries that use sugar beets for

    ethanol have a better idea.
