I HAVE to quit the English lessons

March 21st, 2006 at 04:03 am

...as soon as it is humanly possible..not only am I exhausted by Wednesday, but Ale is having trouble at school and I cannot really help her...I mean, I tried today, but, the poor kid was falling asleep on her notebook! (I arrived at 8:45 and, I had her practicing dictations and spelling until 9:15, which is a bit past her bedtime!)...plus, I feel like a drill sargent, Mom is not fun anymore!...she has a "graded dictation" on Wednesday...
And, I can't really expect the nanny to help..she's more than willing but, it's difficult for her... I had to explain the word "dictation" to her... after all, she only went as far as 1st grade herself...and at a public school, too!!...

Err what is dictation? and does your kid really need it? I mean to me dictation is writing what someone says (or typing) or being the one saying it to be written. Is that a life skill?

Princess, dictation IS when someone reads a word and you are able to write that word. Yes, it is a life skill (you use it when taking notes at a lecture, for example, eventhough that is not really dictation, the skill you are using is basically the same). It means you can discriminate sounds and identify the corresponding letter for it. We use it everyday- if someone calls on the phone to give you an adress or phone number, this is the skill you use!

Brittany, I started taking English lessons in 5th grade, 3 hours per week at first. I love languages and studying English seemed like a fun way to make a living!- I wanted to be a translator, but, unfortunately, the carreer was/is not offered in El Salvador, so I had to settle for Licenciatura en Idioma Ingles. Not exactly the same (you don-t get the translating/interpretation skills taught to you), but close enough!

I bet taking your DD to the english lessons with you would be better use of her time, but that is just plain IMO.

And yeah if you count taking notes or talking on the phone we use diuctation, but umm wouldn't she get petter practice on those skills by talking on the phone or taking notes? guess I just don't understand the removal of a skill from the real world application, but then I am a homeschooler, so we do most of our learning where we would be doing our using...

Anyway ditto the hope for more time!
