Emotional shopping

December 11th, 2006 at 11:32 pm

...today cousin was telling me about what she bought her darling son: a new pair of jeans, a new shirt and a new sweater...total cost of $160!!!!....(remember she still owes me $1000!!!)...I felt so enraged!...I asked why she had bought that and she said: It's his Xmas present...WHAT??...I have a fixed income, am semi-current on all my debts and I'm trying to buy all Ale's presents for less than $30!!!... for a while, I FELT like just going and buying everything I WANT for Ale...and I thought: why does she, who doesn't have a fixed income and doesn't pay her debts, get to buy anything she wants??...then the voice in my head said loud and clear: BECAUSE YOU'RE TRYING TO BE FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE, AND SHE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW THAT THE TERM EXISTS!!!....so, I didn't go out and buy anything!...and, guess what...It FEELS GOOD!

In the long run...your daughter will end up with the right values and a deep respect for a mom who raised her to understand financial responsibility.

Trust me, your cousin is NOT doing her son any favors by being so irresponsible.

You are doing the right thing, for the right reasons. Stick to your values---Ale will thank you someday!

I like your savings revenge! YOu have the right attitude about saving; I have the feeling she'll be in debt far longer than you in the future.

in the long run your daughter will be ahead thanks to you... i know from experience that having a parent who is a saver and is financially responsible is something that will give her freedom in the long run... i'm so glad that my parents are at least doing well because now i can place more focus on my own financial goals... of course, i've also felt the other side with my MIL and i can tell you it isn't as pleasant as it sounds...buying your kids everything you think they need has it's price... almost every time she buys us something we don't want and she can't afford we wish she would have put it away into savings instead... i know it sounds selfish but we're not sure how much we'll be able to help her if the time ever comes...
i really think one of the best gifts you can give your kids is stability... good for you for setting such a good example...
