Tropical Storm Agatha

June 3rd, 2010 at 03:41 am

hit Central America hard!
Thankfully, things weren't as bad in El Salvador as in Guatemala Frown for them, though... plus, they have a volcano that is erupting, too!

I was watching the news today and, there was another consequence that I hadn't thought about... one of the bridges at the border with Guatemala collapsed. Most of our veggies come from Guatemala,so, now veggies are more expensive (and scarce!)

Glad to hear you are OK. On top of the storm, Guatemala is also dealing with the eruption of Volcan Pacaya and a giant sinkhole in Guatemala City.

A group of students we know (from our former program) were affected by Pacaya, then Agatha... they had to fly in to San Salvador yesterday, then be transported by van to Antigua because the Guatemala City airport is still closed.

Wow. Poor kids! that really is too much adventure for just one trip! ... yeah, I forgot about the sinkhole...itīs just so... surreal, I guess, I think my mind just blocked it!

When things like that happen about the veggies, it's a reminder to me that growing things yourself can lead to a huge difference. My parents do container gardening on their porch and they grow more than most people do in an entire garden, and they eat what they grow almost all of the time! Plus they have the insurance that the food they grow has no pesticides or other junk. I hope that bridge is back up soon!
